THE IIE’S INDEPENDENT JOURNAL OF TEACHING & LEARNING OBTAINS IMPRESSIVE IMPACT FACTOR
The Independent Journal of Teaching and Learning (IJTL), published by The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private higher education provider, has obtained a very notable impact factor of 1.4 for the 2021 academic year. This is a major milestone in the 15 years of being an accredited DHET journal.
What is an Impact Factor and How is it determined?
Citation metrics are produced by abstracting and indexing databases using their respective datasets and metrics systems. A journal impact factor represents the citation rate calculated over a three-year period, 2 years prior as well as the year in which the citation rate is released.
Journal impact metrics represent a variety of methods for measuring the citation impact of published research on a journal level. Over the years The IJTL has been indexed by ISSU, SABINET and EbscoHost. Three years ago, the IJTL was accepted to be indexed by the reputable Web of Science (WoS) as part of the list of emerging journals.
The journal’s first available impact factor released in 2021 was 1.4. Globally, only 42% of selected and indexed journals across all disciplines have a citation rate higher than 2.
This is a significant achievement given that The IIE is the only Private Higher Education Institution in South Africa with an established academic journal accredited with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and one of only a hand full of South African journals being indexed by WoS. The IIE would like to extent a huge thanks to Dr Brenda van Wyk (Managing Editor) and Prof Dolina Dowling (Editor-in-Chief) for managing the IJTL and the content being published.
The Independent Journal of Teaching and Learning issue 17, volume 2 will be published online in October 2022. The publication aligns with the DHET “Local Journals Rule” which states that at least 75% of contributions published must emanate from multiple institutions. All IJTL issues to date adhere to this requirement. IJTL 17 (2) will publish 10 articles emanating from research from various institutions including The IIE. The demand for publishing in our journal is growing, with both national and international researchers showing interest. A call for papers for the IJTL 2023 issues has been released on the journal website with multiple submissions dates.
THE IIE SEMINAR SERIES DRAWS GREAT INTEREST FROM ACADEMIC COMMUNITY

The next seminar, scheduled for later this month - Migration, Identity, and Contested Spaces: Immigrants as Vulnerable Bodies in South Africa – will be presented by Dr Alex Asakitikpi (IIE MSA).
